How to become an automotive spray painter (refinisher) in Australia
Automotive spray painters, or refinishers, give repaired and new vehicles their final finish. The job mixes technical skill with an artist's eye: matching colours, preparing surfaces and applying coatings that look factory-new.
What the job involves
- Preparing repaired panels: sanding, filling, masking and priming.
- Mixing and matching paint colours, including pearls, metallics and special effect colours.
- Spraying primer, colour and clear coat in a spray booth.
- Polishing and finishing so the repair is invisible.
- Cleaning equipment and following the workshop's health and safety procedures for paint products.
Skills that help
- A good eye for colour and surface finish.
- Patience and careful preparation, because the finish is only as good as the surface under it.
- Steady hands and an eye for detail.
- Respect for safety procedures, including breathing protection and ventilation.
How people get started
- The usual route is an apprenticeship leading to a Certificate III in automotive refinishing technology (or the equivalent in your state or in New Zealand).
- Many people start as a detailer, masker or paint shop assistant and move into an apprenticeship.
Where the career can lead
- Senior painter or colour-matching specialist.
- Paint shop supervisor, production manager or estimator.
- Custom and restoration work, or running your own paint business.

Common questions
Is spray painting bad for your health?
Paint products need careful handling. Reputable workshops provide spray booths, extraction and protective equipment, and train staff to use them. Ask about safety when you apply.
